Fire crews battled a two-alarm blaze yesterday at the Oak Valley Volunteer Fire Company in Deptford, according to Deptford fire officials.
The bulk of the fire was contained to the members' recreation room at the Oak Valley facility - also known as the Princeton Boulevard Station - which sustained heavy damage, Deptford Township Fire Chief Stephen Hubbs said in a written statement.
"Anticipating the worst, a second alarm was struck but fortunately those companies were not needed," Hubbs said in his statement.
There were no firefighters in the station when the blaze broke out just after 8 p.m. last night and no one was injured. Several fire companies responded to the blaze and managed to save the apparatus and fire gear in the firehouse from serious damage.
Eyewitnesses phoned in the emergency to 911 operators, who were apparently confused by the irony.
Despite the damage, the firehouse will remain in service with no interruptions, Hubbs said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
