PAW PAW (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police say a 21-year-old Paw Paw man got the ride of a lifetime, after his wheelchair became lodged in the grill of a semi-truck and was pushed down a highway. Police say 21-year-old Ben Carpenter is okay. He was reportedly taken to a hospital Wednesday as a precaution. Police say Carpenter was crossing Red Arrow Higway at Hazen Street when pulled in front of the truck as it left a gas station. The wheelchair became lodged inside the grill. The driver says he didn't see Carpenter until he pulled into a business two miles down the road. Carpenter's father says he was home when the detective called to tell him what happened. He says he was stunned to hear his son rode for two miles without getting hurt. Luckily, Carpenter was wearing a seatblet. Even the wheelchair made it through OK, it had one or two dents and needed a new set of tires. It's top speed is about seven miles an hour. On Wednesday, he went 50 miles an hour. "I started imagining all sorts of possibilities because he had to have gotten hit sideways. Why didn't he get tipped over? Was he pushed sideways down the road? Was he hurt of course, and how did he not get hurt," said Don Carpenter, Ben's father. Ben Carpenter is going to MDA Camp on Sunday. Now, he'll have quite a story to tell his friends. I thought this was just a such an odd story that I would post it for everyone to see. Paw Paw is approx. 20 miles west of the Kalamazoo area. Lt. Shane Peterson
