Prince Georges County Fire Investigators have determined a fire at a Bowie school was intentionally set. Firefighters/Medics from the Bowie area and surrounding communities responded to a 911 call reporting smoke coming from the Kenilworth Elementary School, 12520 Kembridge Drive, just before 11:00 PM, Sunday, August 31, 2008. Fire/EMS units arrived quickly at the one story educational building and discovered a fire that originated in a storage closet. The fire extended into the multi-purpose room/cafeteria walls and spread through the walls up into the flat roof assembly of the building. An equivalent of 2-alarms of firefighters; approximately 60 personnel on board 19 pieces of fire apparatus, EMS units and support vehicles, were on the scene. It required about one hour to extinguish the fire. There were no reported injuries.
Fire Investigators determined that the fire was “incendiary” and placed the estimated fire loss at $25,000. The investigation remains open and on going. Anyone with information about this fire is encouraged to contact the Departments Arson Hot Line at 301-77-ARSON. Tips may be left anonymously. .
Officials from the school system will meet Monday afternoon to determine the status of the school and if it will be open on Tuesday. Parents should check the schools web site at www.PGCPS.org and monitor media reports for any changes in the school opening.
