COVERT - Flames whipped through a two-story Covert Township house Thursday morning, killing one occupant and injuring five others, Covert Township police said.
A 51-year-old woman who lived at the house at 40893 78th St. died in the 9:42 a.m. fire, which is still under investigation by the state police Fire Marshal Division, Patrolman Anthony Massura reported. Her name was to be released today, he said.
A possible electrical problem in the living room - in the front of the house - may have caused the fire, Massura said. The house sustained severe damage.
There were six people in the house along with the woman who died, and one adult and four children were injured, Massura said.
One of the children, a girl under 10, sustained burns over 70 percent of her body, he said.
The injured were taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment, but their names and conditions were not released by police Thursday.
Massura did say, however, the woman who died was the grandmother of the children in the house.
Assisting Covert firefighters and police were emergency personnel from South Haven, Watervliet, Coloma EMS, state police and the Van Buren County medical examiner's office.
More information about the fire, its victims and its possible cause will be released by police today, Massura promised.
