Just curious... venting? In the words of my Dep. Chief... "an understaffed(less than 3 people) piece has no business on a fireground" If we only have 2 or 3 people we either state to county we cannot responde or that we're waiting for one more.

Soo your saying he just grabbed a line correct? Was the order given by command? If not, what happened to "Coordinated Fire Ground Attack"? Freelancing and lack of Coordinated Fire Ground Attack not only hurts and kills FF's, but it also burns buildings down. Firefighting is more than "eating the shit" and having fun... it's about public image. If you save even a portion of the house it goes a long way. Not to sound negative, but Coordinated Fire Ground Attack (as well as discipline) is something that I've noticed PG lacks.
It's 2007 almost 2008 and why is fire apparatus in a high population area going to calls and fires understaffed? I can see going with only 3, but 2 people... It has amazed me. There's a problem when something like that happens. Maybe it's time for things to change...

I'm serious, not trying to sound like a dick at all, but just taking every window out without having fire behavior in mind get guys killed. I'll send ya video of what taking windows out without thinking does for ya... These guys are less than 20 minutes from me, let's say we've met and they are paid. I'll find the video for ya... it was all caught on tape... yes we were there! Most stations that have career staffing 24/7 have three fire fighters and an officer. If the ambulance goes out then the engine only has two to respond with. As for stations with a large volunteer presence, they usually do not have that problem. My station has career staffing 24/7, which basically means I am one of the last volunteers. I ride when I can, usually on the engine and if necessary I can drive. Most of the dcareer guys don't mind having me around, since if the ambulance goes out at least the engine will have three vice two.

I love the vol. aspect, but maybe it's time for change in that county. IDK... I know if I lived there and an engine showed up with 2 people, I'd have someones head in a chopping block!!!

I wanna make ya think about some stuff. Just passing things on to you that my old man and some the most decorated Chicago FD officer have taught me. Everything has to be done for a reason and not just to take windows to take windows. Always ask and never hesitate to question why a window should be taken, why your pulling a certain line or even why your about to cut the roof off a car that both doors can open. It's those things that make a good FF not the fact that you have a smoked up hlmet and have seen a lot of fire. Anyone can put a fire out with water... the ones that know that different tactics on doing soo are the real FIREFIGHTERS!!! Watch an learn form others... sometimes rushing soo fast and being aggressive can be TOO AGGRESSIVE... We take our time here, but do not "dilly dally". The way i see it... the fire will still be there when we get there. As an officer, I always worry about my company getting there safe and then worry where he fire is. Just be safe there T and always train. Be competent, your life and others depend on it!!

What if your first out rolls with only the EO?? Thats how we do it here. We rely on our paid on-calls to come. Never had any problems with it. Its the way we have done it for years and we will continue to do so.
