Dept 3 (Old Saybrook) was dispatched to a working structure at 5 otis st. upon arrival units faced heavy fire and heavy smoke on the scond floor. Units made the second floor stairwell with and 1 3/4 handline, it was then that a smoke explosion blew the line officer down the stairwell into the D/C, while simultaneously throwing the nozzelman into the wall. A mayday was immediatly given and all units were evacuated until they could regroup. The fire was knocked after the fire had gone through the roof. the second floor was gutted however the house is a save.
