Date of Release: August 11, 2007
Time of Release: 11:00 P.M.
On Saturday August 11, 2007 the Parkside Fire Company was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire at 11 Park Vallei Lane. On arrival the company encountered heavy fire conditions in a two story townhouse and began an interior attack and search for possible occupants. The crew began to make quick progress when suddenly the second story collapsed trapping firefighters Chase Frost and Daniel Brees.
Firefighter Brees was able to be rescued within minutes with the assistance of a crew from Green Ridge Fire Company. Firefighter Frost was extricated within 15 minutes despite the accumulation of a large quantity of building materials, furniture and contents completely covering him. He was eventually freed with the assistance of a crew from Green Ridge Fire Company and Garden City Fire Company.
Both Firefighters Frost and Brees were transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center’s burn center in critical condition. At this time, Firefighter Frost is suffering from burns on 50% of his body. Firefighter Brees is suffering from burns on 5% of his body along with respiratory injuries. Neither is expected to be released from the hospital at this time.
Also suffering minor injuries at the scene were Matt DiDomenico from Parkside Fire Company, John Curtis from Garden City Fire Company, Brad Blackman from Swarthmore Fire Company and a police officer from Chester Township. All were treated and released.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal who is being assisted by the Parkside Borough Fire Marshal.
Assisting Parkside Fire Company on the first alarm were Upland Fire Company, Green Ridge Fire Company, Garden City Fire Company and Holmes Fire Company. After the fire fighters were trapped, a second alarm was struck bringing in Lower Chichester Fire Company, South Media Fire Company, Newtown Square Fire Company, Prospect Park Fire Company, Reliance Fire Company, Lima Fire Company, Middletown Fire Company, Swarthmore Fire Company, Chester Heights Fire Company, Chester City Fire Company and Chester Township Fire Company. Emergency medical services were provided by Parkside Fire Company and Crozer Chester paramedics, Aston Beechwood Fire Company and Media Fire Company.
Parkside Fire Company will update this press release as new information becomes available. Any questions regarding the cause of the fire should be directed to the Pennsylvania State Police.
