WEST PEORIA, Ill.---- A 19-year-old sophomore on Bradley University's soccer team died in a fire at his off-campus house, and three of his roommates are in custody.
Sheridan ''Danny'' Dahlquist of West Peoria died early Sunday at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, less than an hour after authorities say a fire broke out in his second-floor bedroom.
Authorities said Dahlquist's four roommates, also members of the school's soccer team, escaped uninjured. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Three of the roommates were being held Monday in the Peoria County Jail. Officials would not say why they're in custody, but Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy said the men are considered ''persons of interest'' and that prosecutors are reviewing the case.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday. Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said she believes Dahlquist had alcohol in his system, but was alive when the blaze broke out.
Dahlquist graduated from Peoria Notre Dame High School in 2006, and helped the school win its first Class A state soccer title in 2004.
Both of his parents work for the university.
''Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Dahlquist family at this most difficult of times,'' Bradley athletics director Ken Kavanagh said in a statement. ''The pain of his passing will be felt well beyond Bradley University, however, as he was also beloved throughout the community.''
