A fatal house fire occured near the Van Buren, Allegan County line early this morning. Here is the story courtesy of the Kalamazoo Gazette:
BLOOMINGDALE -- One person was found dead Friday morning inside a home in southern Allegan County as firefighters battled a blaze that engulfed two houses on Duck Lake Drive near the Van Buren County line, authorities said.
Allegan County sheriff's investigators believe the body is that of a woman, Lt. Scott Matice said. "It appears that she was trying to get out of the residence but probably succumbed to the flames or smoke," he said.
An autopsy will be performed to positively identify the victim and determine a cause of death, Matice said.
Firefighters from Bloomingdale and Pine Grove townships found the body after responding at about 3:45 a.m. to a report of a house fire at 18 W. Duck Lake Drive in Cheshire Township, according to Matice.
That house and one to its west were in flames when firefighters arrived, Matice said. Both houses were destroyed, he said.
An elderly man who lived in the home next to the one in which the woman was found escaped uninjured.
A cause and origin of the fire had not been determined Friday morning, but the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal's Office was investigating, authorities said.
This area is northwest of Kalamazoo County.
