North Carolina Volunteer Killed
Reidsville, NC -- A volunteer firefighter on his way to a mobile home fire Tuesday morning crashed in his pickup truck and died.
It happened on Crutchfield Road northeast of Reidsville. Troopers say Paul Ellington, 36, of the Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire Department lost control of his truck. The truck skidded across Business 29 and into some trees. It ran off an embankment and landed on its side next to railroad tracks.
The investigating trooper says it appears Ellington was not wearing his seatbelt. He says it appears speed was a factor.
Ellington was honored as the 2003 Firefighter of the Year for the Oregon Hill Department. He grew up in the department. His father is an original member of the department. Ellington volunteered for 17 years.
"His memory and the pride he had in this department will be carried... it will be carried from now on through he lives, and the hearts and memories of those who are left," said Dwain Strader, Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire Department chief.
Ellington worked full-time for the fire chief's heating and air conditioning business.
He was not married. He leaves behind his mother, father and brother.
