The tornado occured around 0130 this morning around the Plainwell area which is about 20miles North of Kalamazoo. I woke up to see many lightning bolts striking all over. It was a fairly bad storm and kinda surprising since severe storms were not predicted for last night. Heres the story courtesy of woodtv.com:
PLAINWELL, Mich (WOOD) - An F1 tornado touched down around 1:30 a.m. in Allegan and Barry counties, and crews are dealing with the aftermath.
Residents in southern Allegan County are dealing with major damage after storms rolled through overnight.
"(The tornado) happened in the middle of the night, a terrible time for a tornado to touch down because most people are sleeping," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Dan Cobb.
Cobb said the tornado looks to be about 100 yards wide with 100 mph winds. He suggested residents to get a weather radio so they receive warnings like these in the middle of the night. Sheriff's deputies told 24 Hour News 8 there is major damage on 103rd Avenue in Plainwell. A barn was knocked down and horses were trapped inside. A 20 - 30 foot horse trailer was tossed across the yard and a two-ton tractor dragged across the property.
Not far from there, on 106th Avenue, at least 15 trees fell down across the road, and on 102nd Avenue a tree came down on a homeowner's deck.
The storm has been tracked by 24 Hour News 8 since it went through Van Buren County, and when it continued to track to the northeast, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning around 1:17 a.m.
