2 Killed, 2 Injured In Nursing Home Fire
Smoke inhalation is the apparent cause of death for two men who were killed in a fire late Wednesday in a nursing home where they lived in north suburban Niles. Two other residents were injured.
Killed were Igor Shteyn, 67, and Naum Berdichevfky, 76, both of 9777 N. Greenwod Ave. Shteyn was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m. and Berdichevfky at 12:24 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which said both appeared to have suffered smoke inhalation. They were pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Firefighters responded to an alarm at 9777 N. Greenwood Ave. about 11:05 p.m. and discovered a blaze in one room on the third floor of the six-story Hampton Plaza Nursing Home, according to Niles police Sgt. Ron Brandt.
Brandt said two other people were taken to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview with injuries that were not life-threatening. It was unknown how they were hurt.
The fire, extinguished by 2 a.m., was contained to the room where it started. Brandt did not know the origin or cause, but said there is no reason to suspect foul play.
The sergeant said no one was rescued.
Hampton Plaza is a for-profit facility with 304 beds which provides numerous medical services, according to medical Websites.
The Park Ridge Fire Department sent eight firefighters, a ladder truck and an engine to the scene, according to Battalion Chief Tim Norton.
The Skokie Fire Department sent an ambulance and a chief to the scene, according to a lieutenant.
The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago were called about 11:55 p.m., but did not provide assistance to any residents because social workers from the nursing home were already on hand, according to spokeswoman Oana Odean.
She said the Red Cross did offer mental health support, but had not received any requests as of 9:45 a.m. Thursday.
The Niles Fire Department was not immediately available for comment.
