The Newport Beach Fire Department is saddened to announce the loss of one of its own.
Firefighter Kevin Pryor passed away Tuesday, June 17 due to a massive inter-cerebral hemorrhage. He was thirty-one years old. Kevin Pryor began his career with the Newport Beach Fire Department in 2005 and served as a dedicated firefighter for the department.
Prior to coming to Newport Beach, Kevin had served as a firefighter with California Fire in Riverside County and the Pismo Beach Fire Department. Kevin Pryor had returned on Sunday night from being a member of the strike team at the Humboldt fire in Northern California.
A friend found him at his home on Monday afternoon and called 9-1-1. He was rushed to Western Medical Center at 12:15 p.m. Monday. Overnight, he was placed on life support and pronounced dead at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17. His family, friends, and fellow firefighters were by his side when he was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center.
Kevin's family is honoring his wishes by participating in an organ procurement program. Kevin began his firefighting career in 1999 with Pismo Beach Fire Department. In 1999 he was named Rookie Firefighter of the Year and then in 2002 Firefighter of the Year by the Pismo Beach Fire Department. He worked as a firefighter in Pismo Beach until 2003 and then went to California Fire in Riverside County. At California Fire, he was named valedictorian of his 2003 Firefighter Academy class.
On June 25, 2005, Kevin Pryor began his career with Newport Beach . He excelled as a member of our department and assisted as an instructor with our Community Emergency Response Team.
Kevin was known for his great sense of humor and hilarious impressions of fellow co-workers and celebrities. He was intelligent and a history buff. He also loved the outdoors and had recently climbed Mount Whitney for the second time this year. Kevin Pryor was a resident of Irvine . Kevin is survived by his mother, Margaret, father ,Mark and brother, Eric.
