From wwmt.com: KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo woman has died after her house caught fire Thursday afternoon. The fire broke out around 3:30 pm on Dover Street, and Kalamazoo Police say they got a call from a neighbor who say smoke in the eaves. The lights and sirens caught a quiet neighborhood off guard, and when the smoke had cleared, a life had been lost. "I just saw all the trucks and my wife said they carried a body out of the house," said Yanis Grants, a neighbor. Kalamazoo Police say the victim was a 61-year-old woman, when she was found inside the house, emergency crews performed CPR, but it was too late, she was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Detectives are trying to figure out what exactly started the fire, but little is currently known. "The fire started in the central portion of the house," said Sgt. Doug Hammerberg of the Kalamazoo Police Department, "it was pretty much confined to that portion in the second floor." Police have not identified the victim, but neighbors told Newschannel 3 that a woman matching the age of the victim lived in the house with her husband, and that it would have been difficult for her to escape the flames. "His wife had an illness and developed a brain based kind of disorder," said Grants. Now people in the neighborhood are waiting to confirm what they believe they already know. Kalamazoo Police say they have no reason to believe that the fire is suspicious, but say that it is still under investigation.
