GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - Firefighters were called Thursday afternoon to the Wimbledon Apartments in the 4300 block of Wimbledon Drive in Grandville.
Firefighters at the scene told 24 Hour News 8 a woman was moving around furniture in her third-floor apartment, plugged in a lamp, heard a pop, and a fire ignited.
The woman's roommate awoke to the woman screaming.
"She called 911. I ran to the fire extinguisher and I couldn't open it with that little metal rod, so she hit it with her wrist. She cut her wrist open. And I tried to use it but I was just in so much shock that I just could not operate it. So we ran downstairs," Roxanne Haveman told 24 Hour News 8.
All of the residents in the three-story building were evacuated.
Witnesses said they saw flames coming out of the roof.
The fire was contained and extinguished a short time later.
An exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
The American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.
