COATESVILLE - Janaury 24, 2009 (WPVI) -- As Saturday turned to Sunday, firefighters could not get the fire under control, but the 7-alarm blaze was finally put under control 2:07 am.
As first reported on 6abc.com, the fire began at 11:31 p.m. Saturday night in the 300 block of Fleetwood Street.
The fire went from a 2-alarm, to a 4-alarm, to a 6-alarm by 1:10 a.m.
Officials tell Action News, arriving firefighters discovered a home in the middle of the block on fire and with flames quickly spreading to homes on both sides
Firefighters called in a second and third alarm which brought in several neighboring fire companies to help fight the blaze in extremely cold temperatures.
As of this report, no injuries have been reported.
Residents are being evacuated and bused to Gordon Elementary School on Kersey Street in Chester County.
One firefighter suffered a broken ankle and taken to Brandywine Hospital.
The fires occur on the same day an Informational Neighborhood Watch meeting is scheduled at City Hall from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Meetings are also scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday and 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is setting fires in Coatesville.
Spokeswoman Kristin Geiger says since the first of the year, the city about 45 miles west of Philadelphia has recorded 13 arsons. And last year, Fire Chief Kevin Johnson says, Coatesville had 15 deliberately set fires.
Firefighters were called to put out two blazes just before midnight Wednesday.
In December, three people were charged with arson. One of the fires killed an 83-year-old woman.
The Citizens Crime Commission announced the reward on Thursday. Geiger says the city is also seeking volunteers for block watches.
Johnson says firefighters have been going door-to-door, offering free smoke detectors and batteries.
