COLUMBUS COUNTY - On Monday, March 23rd, Fair Bluff Fire Rescue was dispatched to a MVC involving a vehicle versus a bridge with two persons pinned.
Due to the incident being on Highway 904 on the county line, a total of seven agencies from two counties responded.
Upon arrival, crews found one fatality and one critical patient heavily entrapped.
Due to the critical patient and the extent of damage, an Airlink helicopter from New Hanover County was requested.
Agencies worked for 50 minutes with multiple sets of extrication tools to free the critical patient.
The extrication proved difficult due to access to the driver’s side of vehicle being on the hill side of the bridge and the amount of intrusion of the concrete bridge railing into the passenger compartment.
The LZ was established in a vacant lot beside the bridge which allowed the patient to be in the air and inbound to New Hanover Regional Medical Center approximately seven minutes after being removed from the vehicle.
The fatal patient was then removed from the vehicle and the scene was turned over to the NCSHP.
All agencies worked well together even though they have seldom had the occasion to respond to the same incident.
This incident proved the value of training with departments outside of your home county or state.
