Transylvania County BREVARD - At 10:44 hours, Monday, March 30, the Brevard Fire Department received a call for a subject pinned. Upon arrival, units found a 35 foot, 12 inch diameter steel pipe that had fallen from approximately the third floor of a building under demolition. The pipe penetrated the roof of the cab of a “trackhoe” pinning the operator to the rear of the cab and seat. Stabilization of the steel pipe was difficult due to its size and weight. Along with multiple chains and cribbing and various extrication equipment, a “trackhoe” from the site was used to stabilize the top of the pipe. A short ram was used to finally lift the pipe approximately 6 inches from the patient. Command immediately requested Mission Hospitals MAMA helicopter. Transylvania County Paramedics and MAMA flight paramedics had patient care while Brevard Fire conducted rescue operations. The patient was conscious during the extrication which took one hour.
