CHARLOTTE - Just before 11 a.m. the Charlotte Fire Department Communications Center received a call reporting a fire at the International Paper Company located at 210 E. 28th Street in North Charlotte. Firefighters from nearby Station 4 were first to arrive and reported a large pile of paper products on fire with flames threatening a structure. The fire had already spread to nearby brush and was intensifying because of the large amount of product and windy conditions. Firefighters quickly began to extinguish the blaze with hoselines and water streams from ladders trucks, but the fire continued to intensify. Fire officials transmitted a 2nd and then a 3rd Alarm assignment bringing more than 65 firefighters to the scene. Firefighters were able to knock-down the main body of fire in approximately 70 minutes and remained on scene to put out hot spots for several hours after the initial call for service. All company personnel were able to self-evacuate without incident and there were no injuries to report. Fire Investigators have ruled this fire accidental and damage estimates were not readily available. Units responding: Battalions 2, 3, 4 Engines 4, 7, 11, 64, 1, 8, 27, 2, 22 Ladders 4, 1, 18 Rescue 3 Primary Agency: Charlotte Fire Department Courtesy of www.firenews.net
