Fire damages Willow Lakes apartment By PAUL FRANZ, Staff writer Sunday News
WILLOW STREET, Pa - A kitchen fire in an apartment at the Willow Valley Lakes Manor retirement community in Willow Street Saturday forced a woman and residents of the E building to evacuate while firefighters doused the small blaze.
The woman, whose name was not released, was taken for medical evaluation. There were no injuries, said Chief Mike Reese of the Willow Street Fire Company.
"Her situation is satisfactory at this time," Reese said.
The fire broke out in the third-floor apartment around 1 p.m. It was caused by food that was left unattended on a stove, Reese said.
The damage was confined to the kitchen, he said, describing it as "moderate."
Residents of the E building were evacuated to the F building while firefighters resolved the situation. Residents were let back in at about 2:45 p.m., Reese said.
The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes, he said. Heavy smoke that spread through the third floor corridors was ventilated.
"The victim has been displaced for the entire weekend," Reese said. "She won't be back in the apartment."
Reese said a restoration company has to be called in, and the appliances in the kitchen have to be replaced.
The retirement complex is on Willow Lakes Drive and Beaver Valley Pike and houses about 300 people.
Fire departments from West Lampeter, Lancaster, Millersville and Lafayette also responded to the fire.
