The Frederick County Courthouse was burning........................150 years ago next weekend.
A major war had just begun, The Civil War.
Chip Jewell of Frederick County ECC, museum president, and Frederick County historian summoned all "able bodied men of Fredericktowne to organize for the sake of fire protection".
The Frederick County courthouse, now the Frederick City Hall was burned during the civil war, 150 years ago next weekend.
Event organizers organized the event to re-enact the burning, as well as display some period fire equipment that served in the City of Frederick.
They also provided a history of the Frederick Fire service for those in attendance.
The highlight was the use of "OLD LADY", a handpumper of the United Steam Fire Engine Company #3 of Frederick. This unit was originally purchased from the Mechanicsville FD which later was absorbed by the Baltimore City FD.
This unit was on hand at the fire in 1861, and through some hard work by some dedicated volunteers, it was in working condition, and pumped water today.
Mr. Jewell covered how fires were fought, from the use of hand pumpers, to bucket brigades. 15 volunteers lined up to be in the brigade, and using buckets provided by Firehouse Subs, they moved water to the trough for the Old Lady to draft from. As the buckets were emptied, the women ran them back to be refilled. This is the way it was done in those days, and he was hoping to display that. It must have been a big fire, as the mayor of the City of Frederick came out in a suit to help pass buckets!
Truly a great event to have attended!
