Article from www.LancasterOline.comFire destroys small greenhouse in Pequea By JENNA SPINELLE, Staff Lancaster New Era Published: Jan 03, 2008 12:01 PM EST LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. - An early morning fire sparked by a malfunctioning heater destroyed a small greenhouse in Pequea today, causing about $1,000 damage. Conestoga Fire Chief Paul H. Thomas said the 15-by-30-foot plastic structure owned by Jeffrey Leed, 1329 River Hill Road, was completely engulfed when fire crews arrived on scene shortly before 4 a.m. today. "We got there and it was just completely down already," Thomas said. Fire crews had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, Thomas said. The fire also scorched a small part of wooded area behind the greenhouse, but Thomas said crews were able to contain the blaze before it spread very far. Thomas said the driver of a train passing by on the nearby railroad noticed the fire and made the initial 911 call. Leed was in his home — located about 50 feet from the greenhouse — at the time of the fire, but was not injured. Thomas said Leed was growing flowers in the greenhouse and using an electric heater to keep them warm in the sub-freezing temperatures overnight. In addition to Conestoga Fire Company, fire personnel from Pequea, New Danville, Willow Street and Rawlinsville assisted at the scene.
