9-Alarm Fire Rages On Ocean City Boardwalk
OCEAN CITY, Md. -- Firefighters on Sunday battled a huge blaze on Ocean City's famous wooden boardwalk.
The fire, which started about noon at the Dough Roller Pizza Shop on South Atlantic Avenue, quickly spread to other structures, including Marty's Playland arcade, Ocean City fire department spokesman Capt. Steve Price said.
The fire was discovered when police officers were called to the area for a reported assault in progress and saw smoke and flames coming from the building housing Dough Roller and Sunshine Beachwear. No more details about the reported assault are available.
Price said one firefighter suffered a minor injury to the eye battling the blaze. He was treated at a nearby clinic and had returned to the fire scene. More than 225 firefighters from Ocean City, along with Worcester and Wicomico counties and Sussex County in Delaware, fought the blaze. By 2:30 p.m., they declared the fire under control.
The blaze destroyed the Dough Roller and beachwear businesses, Price said. Playland and two apartments above it sustained damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The city's tourist web cams captured some of the mayhem.
Ocean City's boardwalk was built in 1902 by oceanfront hotel owners, who used to roll it up at high tide. In 1910, a permanent wooden boardwalk was built, running about five blocks, according to the city's tourism bureau.
Today's boardwalk was built after a storm in 1962 destroyed the old promenade. It stretches nearly three miles along Atlantic Avenue to 27th Street.
The boardwalk, called "picture-perfect" by the Travel Channel, has always been one of the resort's star attractions. Anyone going to Ocean City knows you must stop by the Inlet and visit famed Thrasher's, which has offered up vinegar-drenched French fries for over 70 years, or take a spin on the boardwalk amusement park's antique Trimper's Carousel.
The Travel Channel honored the walkway as one of the “Best American Boardwalks,” and it was named one of the Top 10 boardwalks in the country by USA Today.
Sunday's fire wasn't the first time the boardwalk has been hit by ravaging flames. In September, 1929, a dozen concessions and restaurants were destroyed in a blaze, according to the New York Times.
