MAYDAY transmited, four fighters burned Mon. Oct 29th 2007
Four DC firefighters were injured this afternoon at a two-alarm rowhouse fire in the northeast section of the city. Just after 3 pm (10/29) units from the DC Fire Department were alerted for a house fire in the 600 block of 4th Street NE
According to Alan Etter, Public Information Officer for DC Fire Department, when units arrived on the scene they encounter heavy fire coming from the rear porch of a two-story rowhouse with fire extending to the upper floors and to adjacent dwellings
As the crew from Engine Company Four was making an aggressive attack on the fire on the top floor they became trapped and injured and were able to transmit a MAYDAY.
Firefighters from Rescue Squad 1 along with other firefighters were able to reach the firefighters and removed from the dwelling.
Authorities say Sergeant Michael Lacore suffered burns on thirty percent of his body and was taken to the burn unit at Washington Hospital Center. Firefighters Charlie Shyab and Douglas Donnely both suffered minor injuries and firefighter Kenneth Humphries suffered very minor injuries and his name have not been released.
It took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control with no other injuries
DC Fire Investigators believe the fire was caused by some oily rags being stored next to some propane canisters in the home next door. They believe the rags ignited the propane, setting off an explosion, and the fire burned from the back porch of the home to the houses on either side.
